Your Rug Is Probably Too Small: Here’s How to Choose the Right Size
We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if something feels “off” in your living room, your rug might be the culprit. One of the most common design mistakes we see is an area rug that’s too small for the furniture around it. A rug shouldn’t float like an island in the center of your room. It should anchor the room.
In the Living Room
At minimum, we like the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit comfortably on the rug. In larger rooms, placing all of the furniture completely on the rug creates an even more luxurious look. An 8’ x 10’ works in many living rooms, while 9’ x 12’ and 10’ x 14’ rugs are often better suited for larger seating arrangements. When you’re caught between two sizes, we generally recommend going larger.
Under a Dining Table
Here’s the test: Pull the chair out. Is it still on the rug? It should be. Ideally, allow approximately 24–30 inches of rug beyond the edge of your dining table so guests aren’t constantly catching chair legs on the edge.
In the Bedroom
Your rug should extend far enough beyond the bed that you actually step onto it. For many rooms, an 8’ x 10’ rug works under a queen bed, while a 9’ x 12’ is often a beautiful choice under a king. Room dimensions and furniture placement always matter, so measure before ordering.
Think of Your Rug as the Foundation
A rug isn’t simply another accessory. It establishes the boundaries of a seating arrangement, connects furniture, adds softness, and often helps determine the color palette for the entire room.
Sometimes the right rug doesn’t just finish the room—it makes everything else suddenly make sense.
