Your Cabinet Hardware Might Be Too Small
Cabinet hardware is one of those details that seems minor—until you see the difference the right hardware makes. At Wayne Home & Design Co., we think of hardware as the jewelry of your cabinetry. It’s one of the final layers that can take a kitchen or bathroom from basic to beautifully customized. And one of the most common mistakes? Choosing pulls that are too small.
Let the Cabinet Determine the Scale
Hardware should feel proportional to the drawer or door it’s installed on. As a starting point, we often look for a pull that’s approximately one-third the width of a drawer front, although contemporary designs can absolutely go larger.
For example:
- 12” drawer: approximately 3–4” pull
- 18” drawer: approximately 5–6” pull
- 24” drawer: approximately 6–8” pull
- 30–36” drawer: approximately 8–12” pull
These aren’t hard rules. They’re starting points. In fact, we often prefer slightly oversized hardware because it gives cabinetry a more substantial, custom appearance.
What About Really Wide Drawers?
For oversized drawers, you have options. One longer pull creates a clean, updated look. Two smaller pulls can create a more traditional appearance. The right choice depends on the style of the cabinetry and the overall design of the room.
Pantry and Appliance Pulls
Here’s another place you shouldn’t be afraid to go big. Tall pantry cabinets and paneled appliances need hardware that visually matches their scale. Longer appliance-style pulls—sometimes 12, 18 inches, or even larger—can look incredible.
Knobs and Pulls Can Work Together
You also don’t have to choose between knobs or pulls. We frequently combine them. Knobs might appear on cabinet doors while coordinating pulls are used on drawers. It’s a timeless combination that adds another subtle layer of detail.
The Finishing Touch
Cabinet hardware is something you’ll touch every single day, so it needs to be functional—but don’t underestimate its visual impact. Scale it appropriately. Choose something comfortable. Don’t be afraid of a little personality. And remember: Small hardware doesn’t necessarily make cabinetry feel delicate. Sometimes it just makes the hardware look too small. When in doubt, give it a little more presence.
